1-Day Plein Air Oil & Cold Wax Workshop

At Stanford Hills Estate

9.30 am – 3.30 pm

A full-day workshop at the beautiful Stanford Hills Estate.
The cost is R950 and includes morning coffee/tea, lunch, cold wax medium and a primed 24 x 24 cm HDF panel.

What you can expect to get out of this workshop:

  • Learn about the unique qualities of cold wax medium.
  • Experiment with new techniques, e.g. painting alla prima (wet-on-wet), creating interesting textures with brushwork  and how to build up paint to create depth
  • Be inspired by nature and the beautiful landscape
  • Have a lot of fun. Plein air painting is a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature. It’s also a lot of fun to paint with other people and see how different artists interpret the same scene.

Workshop timings:

  • Friday 27th October 2023
  • Arrive 9.30 am. Meet at The Tasting Room Restaurant at Stanford Hills Estate outside Stanford.
  • Coffee/tea and introductions.
  • 9.45 am Start with a talk and demo.
  • 10.30 am Two hours for painting, during which time I’ll be available for one-on-one advice and support.
  • 12.30 pm Break for a delicious Tasting Room lunch.
  • 1.30 pm Two hours for finishing paintings, during which time I’ll be available for one-on-one advice and support.
  • 3.30 pm Workshop ends. The Tasting Room stays open until 5 pm.

What you need to bring along:

  • Oil paints in the following colours:
    • Titanium white
    • Arylamide (or Cadmium) yellow medium
    • Arylamide (or Cadmium) lemon yellow
    • Yellow ochre
    • Burnt sienna
    • Alizarin crimson
    • Ultramarine blue
    • Optional extra colours
      • Pthalo Blue or Cerulean blue
      • Dioxazine Violet
  • A couple of bristle/hog hair brushes (a no.4 and no.6 will work)
  • A metal palette knife
  • An easel:
    • Either, a French box easel, or
    • A tripod-type easel, or
    • A table easel (although this will limit where you can set up)
  • A sealable container for brush washing
  • An apron
  • A palette:
    • Either, disposable tear-off palettes, or
    • A wooden palette, or
    • A palette box
  • Kitchen roll, rags and/or baby wipes for cleaning up brushes, equipment and your hands.
  • A 4B pencil for sketching and value drawings
  • Your phone or a tablet (for taking reference photos)
  • Hat and sunscreen, and a warm top,  just in case.
  • A bag for carrying everything with you.
  • We may be walking along some uneven ground, so please wear suitable footwear.

This workshop is open to all levels, and best suited to those with some painting experience who would like to experience plein air painting and try out painting with oil & cold wax medium.

  • For the workshop to take place, a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 people must book.
  • There is always the risk that the weather won’t be perfect on the day. As plein air painters, we can put up with a bit of wind, or more extreme heat and cold weather by being prepared. If, however, 24 hours before, the forecast is absolutely dire, i.e. gale force winds or a mini-monsoon, I will postpone the workshop until the following Friday.
