Are you looking to explore the world of plein air painting? Here’s the perfect opportunity. This two-day plein air landscape painting workshop in Stanford is informative and fun and will teach you the basics of painting from life in the landscape. With practice and guidance, you’ll be able to hone your skills in capturing the light, shadow, texture and more. Don’t miss out on this amazing adventure.
When? Wednesday & Thursday the 1st & 2nd of March 2023
Where? Two different locations, depending on weather (info below)
This plein air workshop is for oil or acrylic painters. I will be working with oil paints but acrylics can be used if preferred. The course will cover everything from value, composition and colour mixing to drawing, brushwork and managing the potential impracticalities of working outside.
Plein air painting is unpredictable and each day will present new challenges and learning opportunities. A assortment of instruction and interaction opportunities are planned including critiques, demos, and mini-lessons as needed. I prefer to teach to the needs of the group and the occasion rather than to a rigid format.
All skill levels are welcome! Only a positive attitude is required.
We will spend the first day painting at one location (first day The Tasting Room at Stanford Hills), and the following day is open to discussion with the group as we have a few options:
- A village scene
- A classic river scene
- The expansive view from the Birkenhead Brewery
- More Kleinriviersberg magic and the lilypond at Zesty Lemon
. Lunch is included on both days.
What you will learn in this workshop
- How to approach outdoor painting to get the most out of it
- How to choose your composition from the vast landscape in your view
- How to simplify a scene for dramatic impact
- How to work with a limited palette of colours
- How to arrange the foreground, middle ground and distant areas of your painting
- How to capture the fleeting moments of light
- Atmospheric perspective tips
The emphasis is on doing and I encourage students to work fearlessly, to loosen up and see the essence of the simplified forms. Forget about the details and go for the big picture.
Class size is limited.
