Tracy Algar – South African landscape painter

Tracy Algar is a South African landscape painter known for capturing the nuanced effects of light on both natural and man-made structures. Her work offers a unique perspective on the South African landscape, particularly the Karoo.

Growing up in Windhoek, Namibia, Tracy’s early experiences with the vast African landscape profoundly shaped her artistic vision. Today, she lives and works in Adendorp, in the heart of the Karoo, finding daily inspiration in the dramatic scenery and unique light of the region.

Beyond her painting practice, Tracy is a dedicated art educator. For six years, she taught art to school children in partnership with Creative Skills Factory in Stanford, sharing her passion for creativity with young learners. Since 2015, she has also facilitated painting workshops and taught art classes for adults, fostering artistic growth and exploration.

Tracy’s artwork has been exhibited in various locations across South Africa, including Cape Town, Hermanus, Stanford, Umhlanga, and Knysna. Recent notable exhibitions include “Art Rooted in Nature,” a collaboration by Strauss & Co, Intethe Gallery, and the Hermanus FynArts Festival, and the Baardskeerdersbos Art Route 2024. Her paintings are held in private collections both in South Africa and internationally.

Tracy Algar’s work is characterised by its atmospheric quality and intimate scale. She primarily works in oil paint on board or canvas, embracing the challenges and rewards of painting en plein air whenever possible to connect directly with her subject matter.
