Plein Air Workshops

My plein air workshops offer an opportunity for artists of all skill levels. They can immerse themselves in painting outdoors on location in the Graaff-Reinet area of the Karoo.

The workshops focus on developing the technical skills required for plein air painting in a supported environment.

Painting outdoors offers an opportunity to grow as an artist. It also provides a wonderful way of being in the moment. Experience nature intimately as both inspiration and studio.

My goal is to meet artists where they are on their artistic journey. I aim to offer advice and support to help them expand their practice. This expansion includes the joys and benefits of plein air painting.

I usually run two plein air workshops a year. To be notified when a workshop date is announced, please sign up to my mailing list below.

Build your own workshop

Step 1: Select a workshop topic from the list below.

Step 2: Get four or more friends together and decide on dates and a suitable venue for your workshop.

Step 3: Email me your first, second and third choice of dates for the workshop.

Depending on the topic, workshops can be half a day or a full day.

Art Workshop Topics

Plein Air Pencil Value Studies

There are some basics to learning to see like an artist, in values and large shapes. We’ll learn how to get down what we see into our sketchbooks quickly and accurately, generating ideas for future paintings.

Oil & Cold Wax Alla Prima Painting

Cold wax medium is my “secret weapon” when it comes to painting alla prima. In this workshop I’ll show you my plein air alla prima process and we’ll finish a small painting together.

A full day workshop

Some painting experience necessary.

Colour & Brushwork

We will use a limited colour palette and spend the day mixing colour. We will also explore the possibilities of brushwork with oil paint and cold wax medium.
