Overberg Landscapes

Overberg Landscapes is an ongoing series of oil paintings incorporating views from the villages of Stanford and Baardskeerdersbos and nearby farms.

These small landscapes offer a postcard of the Overberg to take home with you and hang on your wall, a window of sorts, into the views of this part of the world.

My work in this series started in 2021, shortly after we were released from our strict lockdown in South Africa. It began as a response to being kept inside for such a long time. I went outside and drew and painted.

You can see my drawings on my Sketchbook page.

At first I was starting the paintings en plein air, and finishing them at home. Once my stamina for being out increased, and I learned the alla prima technique, I began to finish my paintings out in the field.

I keep these paintings small, for manageability out in the field, and also to make it possible to finish a painting in the time that I can stay out there.

The larger paintings in this series are painted in my studio from sketches, photographs and memories.
