Lone Tree in a Field, Fork & Farm

This original Overberg landscape oil painting captures a quiet, solitary tree standing guard in a field at the Fork & Farm near Stanford. I painted this piece as a demonstration during a workshop, using the students’ curiosity and the energy of the day to guide my brushwork. I wanted to focus on how the sharp, midday shadow anchored the tree to the landscape, grounding it against the distant, hazy hills.

Working en plein air surrounded by fellow artists, I aimed for a sense of immediacy and truth in the colour. This work of painterly realism is a study of that specific, sun-drenched atmosphere that makes the Western Cape countryside feel so timeless.
